ORTHODOXIA.INFO | Spiros Papageorgiou The speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, Andriy Parubiy, has invited Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew to visit the country, according to the Interfax news agency.
“I invite the Ecumenical Patriarch to Ukraine,” said Mr Parubiy during his meeting with the exarchs of Constantinople, Archbishop Daniel of Pamphilon and Bishop Hilarion of Edmonton, in Kiev last Friday.
Asking the two envoys to convey this invitation to His All-Holiness, Mr Parubiy added that, “The Ecumenical Patriarch visiting Ukraine would be a major event both for the country and its parliament.” He also went on to say that he hopes autocephaly will soon be granted to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
According to Interfax, in his reply Bishop Hilarion of Edmonton stated that, “His All-Holiness will visit Ukraine as well as the Ukrainian Parliament, which made the historic decision to put forward a petition to the Patriarch asking for autocephaly to be granted to the Church of Ukraine.”
