NEW YORK, United States | Syria must “turn the page of the past” and guarantee justice for all its citizens, transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa told the United Nations General Assembly, presenting a vision of a state rooted in equality and accountability.
Without directly mentioning Christians or other religious minorities, al-Sharaa stressed that the new Syria would be built on institutions and laws that “guarantee the rights of all without exception.” He accused the previous regime of fueling sectarian and ethnic strife that resulted in mass displacement and widespread destruction.
The Syrian leader highlighted the creation of transitional justice committees and inquiries into the fate of the disappeared, noting that UN missions have been allowed to investigate crimes and hold accountable
