ORTHODOXIA.INFO | Andreas Loudaros A statement made yesterday by Archbishop Ieronymos of Greece is being interpreted as a sign that the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece is about to convene in order to address the Ukraine issue.

Declining to give his personal opinion on recent events within world Orthodoxy, which he was originally asked for, the Greek primate stated that, “The Church has institutions, and no individual can come before the decisions these institutions make,” adding that, “We are waiting.”

The only institution of the Greek Church hierarchically superior to the archbishop is the Holy Synod, thus the Greek primate’s silence can be interpreted as an indication that he is waiting for the Holy Synod to first convene and declare its official position on developments in Ukraine before he himself does so.

The archbishop’s statement comes after an appeal was put forward by Metropolitan Serafim of Kythira, according to which the hierarch requests a meeting of the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Church of Greece in order to discuss the Ukraine issue as well as recent reports that Archbishop Ieronymos does not want to personally take a position on the matter but instead is waiting for the Ecumenical Patriarchate to finalize the process so that the Church of Greece through its Synod can then announce its position.
