ORTHODOXIA.INFO | Spiros Papageorgiou According to a statement by Iryna Lutsenko,  Ukrainian president’s representative in parliament,  Petro Poroshenko intends to soon recommend the transfer of the title to St Andrew’s church in Kyiv to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for permanent use.

“The president expressed his desire to see the Church of Ukraine receive the Tomos as soon as possible, and as a sign of solidarity with this process, has  proposed a symbolic gesture which we will discuss in the coming days,” said Lutsenko during a meeting with the heads of the parliamentary parties.

She revealed that, “President Poroshenko has suggested that ownership of the church of St Andrew be transferred to the Ecumenical Patriarchate for permanent use in what will be a symbolic gesture aimed at highlighting the fact that St Andrew once baptized the Christians of Ukraine.”

According to Lutsenko, the Ukrainian president requested that all the parliamentary parties support this legislation.

St Andrew’s in Kyiv is a baroque church built along the eastern bank of the Dnieper river and designed by Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1754. Currently the building serves as the cathedral church of the Autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
