ORTHODOXIA.INFO | Spiros Papageorgiou Patriarch Kirill of Moscow has revealed details from his meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul last August, news agency RIA reports.

The Russian primate revealed the details of the meeting, for the first time, at the Faith and Word international forum of Orthodox Christian media. The meeting is widely perceived as marking the beginning of the rupture between the churches of Moscow and Constantinople, with the former having now severed all ties with those clerics answering to the latter.

According to Patriarch Kirill, in response to his request to meet with Patriarch Bartholomew in a neutral location, the Russian primate was told that he had to travel to Istanbul, where the ecumenical patriarch resides.

Specifically, at the forum, the Russian primate said: “I realized that this was his wish in order for his plan to be put into effect. Somebody told me, “Your Beatitude, don’t go, it will be humiliating,’ but I thought, “No, it won’t be… I will not pay any attention to these games, I am ready to go anywhere with my two feet in order to prevent further developments in the situation which, unfortunately, we have before us today”.

According to Patriarch Kirill, Patriarch Bartholomew did not address him in a brotherly manner. At the same time, the Russian primate noted that he himself did all that he could to try soften the ecumenical patriarch.

“Even when I noticed that the sentimental level of my interlocutor was beginning to surpass its limits, I tried to calm him and said in a brotherly way: ‘Let’s calm down, let’s talk…”, added Patriarch Kirill.

According to RIA, the Russian primate said that the ecumenical patriarch had brought documented arguments regarding Ukraine to the discussion, but he then went on to say that “Hope will die out last”.

As for those who criticize him for having gone to Istanbul, the primate of the Russian church said that “We had to take the final step.”
