AMMAN, Jordan | King Abdullah II on Monday inaugurated the International Orthodox University at the site traditionally recognized as the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ on the Jordan River, while also endorsing a major church-led initiative marking the 2,000th anniversary of Christ’s baptism in 2030.
During a meeting with Christian religious leaders from Jordan and Palestine at the Baptism Site, known as Al-Maghtas, the Jordanian monarch instructed the government to formally adopt and support the 2030 initiative proposed by the Council of Church Leaders in Jordan. King Abdullah stressed that the implementation plan should prioritize infrastructure upgrades and operational services at the pilgrimage site.
