VATICAN CITY | Pope Leo XIV on Sunday renewed the Vatican’s appeal for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East, urging world leaders to “commit themselves decisively to the path of peace” and secure the release of hostages held in Gaza. Speaking from St. Peter’s Square during his Angelus address, the pontiff also condemned the resurgence of antisemitism and expressed grief over the continued suffering of civilians caught in the region’s conflicts.
“The rise of antisemitic hatred, as we tragically witnessed in Manchester, must concern us all,” the Pope said, warning against “the moral decay that allows hatred to become normalized.” He added that the humanitarian situation in Gaza “remains an open wound for the conscience of humanity.”
