ATHENS, Greece | The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece has issued a detailed explanation of the salary increases granted to Metropolitans and Auxiliary Bishops, publishing a seven-page circular with figures, comparisons and worked examples after the legislation triggered intense public debate.
The Synod said that “initially incomplete official information,” along with misinformation in the media, had shaped public perceptions and surprised even the hierarchs themselves. Under Article 56 of Law 5313/2026, the total monthly pay of the Archbishop of Athens, Metropolitans and titular Metropolitans is set at 90 percent of the public-sector pay ceiling. Titular Bishops and Auxiliary Bishops receive 70 percent of the amount set for the first group, with no additional allowance or benefit payable.
