ORTHODOXIA.INFO | Andreas Loudaros The Archbishop of Athens and all Greece Ieronymos has cancelled his meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, originally scheduled to take place this morning at 8:00 am at the offices of the Athens Archdiocese.

Officially, the Archdiocese has cited the Archbishop’s busy schedule—which includes presiding over the Holy Synod of Hierarchs of the Church of Greece, convening today in order to elect the new Metropolitan of Larissa—as the reason for the cancellation, but many consider the decision undoubtedly tied with the recent move of the Greek Council of State to rule in favor of the Ecumenical Patriarchate regarding ownership of the church of St George built on the Promponas Estate in Athens.

Sources from within the Archbishop’s close circle have noted to orthodoxia.info that the Council’s decision and its consequences have generated much frustration in Athens. Indeed, sources well aware of the situation had originally expressed to orthodoxia.info their doubts as to whether the scheduled meeting would actually take place.

Asked yesterday by orthodoxia.info on his way out of the Holy Synod’s chambers regarding the scheduled meeting, the Archbishop could not confirm it would take place, expressing his concern as to whether he could make the meeting given “tomorrow we have to elect the new Metropolitan of Larissa.”

The heightening of tensions between Athens and the Phanar comes as the Orthodox Church faces new difficulties, with the Ecumenical Patriarchate in particular preoccupied with the issue of the Ukrainian Church.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate is yet to provide comment on the matter.
